Fall Is For Planting
We repeat this phrase every year, because it is the best time for starting shrubs and most perennials, but this season is looking to be just perfect. There is a lot of moisture in the ground and the weather is exceptionally mild. If you have been considering adding some trees, shrubs, or perennials to your landscape, this is the perfect time.
What makes fall the best time to plant?
(1) Mild temperatures and generally moist conditions are perfect for starting new plantings.
(2) Plants actually grow a lot in the fall, but they put their energy into roots instead of leaves and flowers. Unlike spring, there is no transplant shock factor to deal with.
(3) Fall plantings generally need very little water and fertilizer making it easier on you too.
(4) Plants that get established in the fall will wake up in spring with a mature root system ready to support new leaves and flowers.
What is the down side to fall planting?
(1) There is only one downside, and it is purely psychological. You just don't get the instant gratification that comes from planting spring blooming flowers in full bloom. But, if you are willing to think ahead and put in the effort now, the rewards will multiply next Spring
