Planting a Terrarium
Terrariums are wonderful, magical environments. Decorative, attractive, and easy to care for – just plant and forget. A closed terrarium will recycle it’s moisture, thus needing very little attention. They can go a month or more between watering. Open terrariums will dry out faster and require more water. Any clear container can be made into a terrarium. The main requirement is that it be watertight. Choose something large enough to accommodate the plants you want to use. Almost any plant will do well. Choose ones that will fit the size of the container. Slower growing plants require less trimming, and are less likely to take over. If you are willing to pay more attention to them, you can experiment with more aggressive plants. They require more frequent trimming, but will allow you to have more variety in your terrarium.
Follow these easy instructions and have fun! Place a layer of small gravel in the bottom. 1.Sprinkle some activated charcoal on top. (optional)
2.Fill to proper height with a good draining potting soil. 3.Install plants. Don’t overplant, allow room to grow. 4.Water lightly. 5.Add small decorative items.
Place your terrarium in an area where it will get medium or diffused light. Keep away from direct sunlight. Water only when dry. Do not fertilize. As nutrients get used up, the plant’s growth will slow down, helping to keep them under control. Over time the soil can be refreshed by scraping off the top layer of soil, and adding some fresh potting mix. When plants get as big as you want, pinch off the newest growth to keep them bushy.
